PVC, cross-linked polyethylene, silicone, PTFE, FEP, fiber-glass braid, mica, ... these are the most frequent materials used as insulation for heat-resistant cables.
Do you ask what insulation material to choose so that the cable has a sufficient resistance and is not unnecessarily expensive? Even in this case, a well known rule regarding the quality and price holds true - the higher the guaranteed heat resistance of the cable, the higher its price.
What possibilities do we have?
In general, the following categories are available and they are quite similar among various producers, thus a replacement is almost always possible. We´ll demonstrate it on the example of cables from Lapp group:
Typical insulation for cables of a higher standard than usual PVC cables.
Ölflex HEAT 105 MC – UV resistant, black. Stranded wire from naked copper wires.
Typical applications: lighting, outdoor applications, driers.
Ölflex HEAT 145 MC – rigid cable for increased requirements for use. Insulation is abrasion resistant and tear/notch resistant. Halogen-free, fire resistant according to IEC 60332-3, and UV resistant. Finely stranded tinned copper conductors.
Typical applications: lighting, distribution boxes, marine applications.
Widely used and relatively cheap cables family. Lower mechanical resistance (significantly improved at tear/notch-resistant EWKF types).
ypical applications: distribution boxes, devices with higher inner temperature, lighting, HVAC, production of electro-motors, baking machines, baking industry, driers.
FEP insulation (Fluoroetylenepropylene) (-100 ... +205°C)
Excellent resistance to acids, solvents, oils and other chemicals.
Ölflex Heat 205 MC - high temperature and chemical resistance, also suitable for harsh environment.Typical applications: industrial ovens, metal foundry plants, chemical industry, paint shops
Excellent resistance to acids, solvents, oils and almost all known negative influences. Highly tear-resistant.
Ölflex Heat 260 MC – cable for extreme demands. Finely stranded nickel-plated copper conductors. Thin, light and resistant to cracking caused by frequent temperature fluctuation and frost.
Typical applications: industrial ovens, metal foundry plants, chemical industry, paint shops.
Cable with highly resistant glass insulation. Suitable for relatively dry environment.
Ölflex Heat 350 MC – insulation by a braid of a glass silk and the impregnated glass silk braid. Finely stranded nickel-plated copper conductors.
Typical applications: industrial ovens, blast furnaces and glass factories, chemical industry and energetics, production of motors.
Mica insulation (-195 ... +400°C)
Insulation that can handle temperatures up to approx. 1500´C in a short term.
Ölflex Heat 1565 MC – a cable with the highest temperature resistance. Insulated by mica tape braid and the impregnated glass silk. The cable for most extreme demands. Finely stranded nickel-plated copper conductors.
Typical applications: blast furnaces and cokery, refineries, glass factories, metal foundry plants.
