Public key cryptography is based on asymmetric encryption, which uses two keys. One key is used for encryption, the other for decryption, which is a fundamental difference compared to symmetric encryption, which uses only one secret key to encrypt, as well as decrypt.
Symmetric ciphers use the same secret key to encrypt and decrypt, and their security is based on confidentiality of this key. We can divide symmetric ciphers into block symmetric ciphers and stream symmetric ciphers.
