H05V-F, LiYY, LiYCY or LiFY? We´ll advise you how to choose the right cable

Do you use common cables and you´re not sure whether it´s the right one for your application? Then this article is right for you.

Perhaps there´s no device not requiring at least a little bit of a “wire”. Whether for internal interconnections, connection with other devices or because of power supplying. If we have a standard device operating under relatively low voltage and in “standard” conditions, then probably the versatile internationally standardized cables like H05V-K or H07V-K maybe a good solution for majority of connections.

These single-core cables meet a lot of requirements and are of a high quality, flexible and easy to work with. They´re produced by almost every cable producer – an invaluable advantage ensuring stable availability at any circumstances on the market.

But what in cases, when the most common cables don´t suit you? Whether in respect to flexibility, voltage, operating temperatures range or resistance to various chemical agents … Of course there´s a solution, it´s only to necessary to understand cable marking. Fortunately it´s more simple than it may seem.

If we take a look at the document Lapp T6 - Cable marking, we´ll find out that: H05V-K is so called “harmonized” type (H) with a maximum operating voltage of 300/500V (05), with a PVC insulation (V), consisting a class 5 fine stranded wires intended for fixed installations (K).

How “fine” are given wires and how many fine wires are in the given conductor? That can be found in the Lapp T11 document.

Colour coding of cores – also a frequent and very important requirement. For example what´s the difference in colour coding of cores in a 4x2,5 versus 4G2,5 cable? All this is described in the Lapp T9 document.

There are a lot of another criteria, so if you wish to find all this on one place, we recommend you to take a look at the Lapp Cable guide, containing all above mentioned documents and many other.

We believe, that many of you are familiar with these codes but we´re also sure, that many designers don´t have time to search in various documents what can result in selecting a non-optimal cable for their application.

A good example can be the LiFY cable, very similar in properties (as for usage) with universal H05V-K or H07V-K cables, but feelingly more flexible (class 6), thus very suitable for more demanding connections (frequent movement, vibrations) and also very suitable for various connection at development thanks to its high flexibility.

Namely the LiFY and other extra thin solid-core wires with a core of ( DR 016) and 0,32mm ( DR 032) diameters for almost invisible jumpers on a PCB belong to our latest contributions in our stable stock offer. You can access them easily right below this article.
