Audio set (signal source + amplifier + loudspeakers) is a beautiful example that a chain is only as strong as strong is its weakest cell. Source of sound (microphone, CD, DVD, DA converter, ...) as well as an amplifier are nowadays usually of a very high quality and the weakest part of the chain remain loudspeakers.
At loudspeakers it´s especially true, that laws of physics can´t be overpassed. Basics of electroacoustics say for example that, efficiency of the loudspeakers at low frequencies significantly increases with a growing area of the diaphragm. That´s why if we want to achieve the same volume at a 5 cm woofer as at a 25 cm (10“) woofer, the result will be several times higher movement (displacement) of the lower loudspeaker diaphragm. That means that a small loudspeaker will come very soon to its limits and another increasing of the “volume” on an amplifier will cause in a better case a significant sound distortion and in a worse case a permanent damage to destruction of a loudspeaker. Even thou a loudspeaker efficiency can be significantly increased a principle known as a pressure loudspeaker (“driver+horn“) but these loudspeakers are usually only for high or middle frequencies and in majority of cases they don´t belong to a Hi-Fi category.
A second known fact is a directivity. The higher the frequency, the smaller must be a loudspeaker diaphragm, if we want to maintain the highest possible omnidirectivity (180´). For example, if we take a look at a directivity pattern of the high quality tweeter G25FFL we´ll find, that even in the case that we are situated significantly far from the loudspeaker axis, we here sound with almost unchanged volume. On the other hand, if we take a look at characteristics of a top-class wide band loudspeaker B80 (which has a well balanced amplitude characteristics up to the highest frequencies, we´ll find, that the volume is balanced in the loudspeaker axis, but drops down significantly when listening from sides. For example already 30´ from axis the acoustic pressure drops down in about 7dB at 8000 Hz.
I mention these small examples to show, that there´s no “miraculous” loudspeaker, which would be able to overpass laws of physics. Maybe even from this reason so many people found out the difference to listen to a sound via commercial loudspeakers (usually supplied with a home Hi-Fi), in comparison to a sound from loudspeakers and kits from company Visaton, which are regularly taking top places in various various tests.
Moreover, today even industrial applications put higher demand for a sound quality (buildings, automotive, trains, ,...) that´s why even here it´s worth to take a look at higher quality products.
