As an example we´ll mention a well known series of SMT LED Kingbright KP-2012 („0805“). Here we can find a really large amount of universal colour LEDs with various specification. In every colour (or say colour band) we can find several suitable types with a near or the same dominant wavelength but with different luminiosity and sometimes also with a slightly different forward voltage (VF ).
Nowadays SMT LEDs of this category are relatively very cheap (even though these are LEDs of a renowned producer, not „no-name“ components) and so it may seem, that all that is necessary is to go through datasheets of selected types and to choose the one that will “look best”. Many times this procedure is sufficient – especially if you don´t need many thousands of pieces. This approach is supported also by a fact, that even in a case of discontinuation of production of a given type, it will be quite certainly replaced by other suitable type with the same wavelength, which will fully replace previous type.
So where do we direct toward? To the aspect of a price and availability at big supposed production volumes.
The key fact is, that in many cases we´re able to check for you, whether a given type is that most economic alternative or there´s some better more suitable type which for example isn´t on our webpage yet or even on a webpage of a producer. Similarly there many older types available, which already can´t be found on producer´s website, but despite that they are still in production (and probably will be available for a long period yet) and it´s possible that they will suit you better than those found by yourselves.
That´s why if you design LEDs for your devices and you want to be sure of an optimal choice, don´t hesitate to ask us.
