How to Get Rid of Rust? Quickly and Effectively with Evapo-Rust by CRC

In the electronics industry, we often face the challenge of removing rust from various metal surfaces or components. Most rust removers on the market are typically based on various acids, such as phosphoric acid. Generally, these acid-based products are quite effective, but due to their composition and very low pH (strong acids), they are usually quite harmful to the environment, and you need to be very careful when using them. They also often mildly attack even non-corroded – clean metal surfaces, which is, naturally, undesirable.

CRC Evapo-Rust. A Safe Rust Remover

A very good and elegant alternative to classic rust removers is the new Evapo-Rust from CRC Industries. It is a biodegradable, water-based product containing organic salts, non-toxic, non-irritating, and eco-friendly. It is specially designed to remove rust without scrubbing or sanding. Evapo-Rust effectively removes rust down to bare metal and does not attack clean metal.

How does Evapo-Rust work?

When Evapo-Rust comes into contact with rusted steel, it strongly binds with the iron oxide (rust) and removes it from the metal surface. This chemical process, called "chelation," allows for maximum results with excellent material compatibility and multiple, repeated uses of the fluid. During use, the fluid changes from yellow to dark grey, but even with this colour change, Evapo-Rust continues to work and can be reused.

How to use Evapo-Rust?

Simply soak the rusted component in the rust remover. Depending on the extent of corrosion, leave it for a few minutes to several hours. The result is clean metal completely free of rust, even in hard-to-reach places.

How to remove rust with Evapo-Rust in 4 simple steps: 

1. Preparation

Prepare a container and fill it with Evapo-Rust. Clean the rusty part/component with an industrial degreaser to remove any oil contamination.  

2. Soaking

Soak the rusty components in Evapo-Rust so that they are fully immersed in the solution. Let it work for 30 minutes for lightly rusted parts or overnight (24 hours) for heavy rust. 

3. Rinsing

Rinse the objects with clean water. If you still see signs of rust, resoak the item again in Evapo-Rust until it’s fully removed. Slightly heating the solution to 40-50°C significantly speeds up the process, if necessary. 

4. Applying a protective layer

Protect the well-dried objects from further corrosion by applying a specialized product. Suitable options include FPS 3-36, 6-66 Spray 250 ml (33261-AB), SP 350 500 ml, SP 400 500 ml, and many other products from CRC. 

Evapo-Rust has excellent material compatibility. After 24 hours, it has no effect on PVC, PU, PS, PC, ABS, and HDPE (so-called stress-cracking). It also has no effect on aluminium or copper. However, it is not suitable for magnesium and magnesium alloys.
