Well-known industrial Hammond enclosures of 1554 and 1555 series belong to the best in the field of rugged plastic boxes for a long time. If we are looking for a good middle way between mechanical strength, high resistance to various negative impacts and the cost, then the 1554 and 1555 series is definitely a reliable choice.
“Standardized” types, offered by various manufacturers, have been profiled on the market with enclosures over the decades. However, when we take a closer look at the offer of various manufacturers in more detail, we find minor differences that ultimately have a substantial impact on whether the box meets our requirements and expectations or not. Wall thickness, quality of a plastic, internal PCB mounting options, accessories… these are just a few key aspects.
Hammond gave the 1554 and 1555 series everything needed and recently added 6 new sizes, which together form 36 new configurations.
What’s the main difference between 1554 and 1555 series?
1554 is a classic well-established series available in both ABS and PC (polycarbonate). Stainless steel screws and stainless steel threaded bushings practically eliminate corrosion, and high-quality silicone sealing together with a precision design allows IP68 protection for polycarbonate (PC) versions. The bottom of the box is always light gray (RAL 7035) and the lid can be gray, transparent or smoked.
The 1555 Series is based on the 1554 series but represents a more modern alternative. It has an elegantly recessed surface on the lid for easy installation of, for example, a membrane keypad, various labels, etc. At the same time, it also has standoffs PCB on the inner side of the lid (not only at the bottom part).
Polycarbonate versions have a high UV resistance and are therefore also suitable for outdoor use.
The new available sizes for 1554 and 1555 series are:
●Type L: 105 x 105 x 60 mm ● LA: 105 x 105 x 90 mm
● Q: 140 x 140 x 60 mm
● QA: 140 x 140 x 90 mm
● W: 180 x 180 x 60 mm
● WA: 180 x 180 x 90 mm

- ABS versions are moulded from general-purpose material which carries a flammability rating of UL94-HB. For indoor use.
- Polycarbonate versions are UV stabilized for outdoor use. Gray polycarbonate carries UL94-5VA rating, while clear and smoked lids have the UL94V-0 rating.
- Gasketed lid with a two-piece “tongue & groove” construction provides protection against access of oil, dust, and water.
- A replaceable gasket is one piece made from high temperature, U.L. listed silicone. Supplied loose inside the enclosure (not pre-installed).
- ABS Plastic versions are designed to meet IP66.
- The lid is secured with included M4 stainless steel machine screws which are threaded into integral stainless steel bushings for repetitive assembly & disassembly. All hardware is stainless steel to avoid corrosion caused by dissimilar metals.
- Lid screws are self captivating (lid holes are threaded with the first installation of lid screws).
- Internal features are maximized for mounting options and vary with size:
- Internal DIN rail mounting tabs moulded into most models, except sizes “C” and “D”.
- Threaded (M3) integral brass inserts and/or standoffs (#6 self-tapping screws) for P.C. board or inner panel mounting in all but the smallest size (“B”).
- Vertical P.C. card guides (for 1.5 mm thick P.C. boards) are moulded in all but the smallest size (“B”).
