A hot air station – „I don´t need it“ ... or do I?
In times when we only had THT and few SMT components on our PCBs, a need for hot air station was usually low even though even in those times such a station was a must for example for desoldering of multi-pin components, especially in case of multi-layer PCBs.
Currently, when QFN and other similar packages are hardly being soldered manually at prototype development and many other new packages with pads on the bottom side are impossible to be soldered by a classic soldering station, the usage of a hot air station is much bigger. Naturally, the same applies to servicing.
Even if put every effort into soldering the given component manually – there´s always one factor present here – tension. As we know, a solder decreases its volume during cooling. If we solder SMT components by reflow in the oven or by hot-air, all pads/pins of a given component are heated and cooled more-less simultaneously. If we also don´t use too much solder, resulting tension acting on component pins is usually acceptable.
On the other side, at manual soldering it´s easy to add much more solder than necessary and this big amount can cause microscopic crack in component. Maybe you too have experienced this phenomenon, especially when soldering bigger SMT components, which are quite sensitive to this.
WTHA1 is digitally controlled and with a built-in turbine and therefore it doesn´t require external compressed air connection. Moreover, the station is built in a way that it´s possible to stack WT series on it (for example WT1010, WT1012).
