Hierbei handelt es sich um eine Art von LCD-Display, bei der eine dünne Schicht mit Aktivmatrixtransistoren verwendet wird, um die Anzeige von bewegten oder statischen Bildern auf der Oberfläche zu ermöglichen. Die Pixel dieser Displays sind in drei Subpixel mit den Farben Rot, Blau und Grün unterteilt, die mittels Transistoren gesteuert werden. Dies ermöglicht die Darstellung von Farbtönen innerhalb des RGB-Spektrums. Für den Betrieb des Displays ist eine Steuerelektronik erforderlich, die zusammen mit dem Display selbst das LCD-Modul bildet. Für die Bildanzeige auf dem Display ist in der Regel eine Hintergrundbeleuchtung erforderlich, die oftmals die Verwendung von LED-Dioden beinhaltet.
Hierbei handelt es sich um die meistverwendeten LCD-Displays, die bei Laptops, Mobiltelefonen, Monitoren, Fernsehern und ähnlichen Geräten zu finden sind.
